Chris Rokos, the 55-year-old founder of Rokos Capital Management and one of Britain's most successful hedge fund managers, has donated £190 million to the University of Cambridge. The gift — the largest private donation to a British university in modern history — will establish the Rokos School of Government, a new academic institution designed to prepare future leaders to address global challenges.
The school is expected to begin operations in autumn 2026, and its stated mission is to combine academic rigour with practical training in governance, policy, and leadership. Think a UK equivalent of Harvard's Kennedy School, backed by the kind of money that makes things happen quickly.
Who Is Chris Rokos?
If you've never heard of Chris Rokos, that's by design. He's one of those financiers who prefers the quiet life — no reality shows, no Twitter pronouncements, no yacht photos. An Eton scholarship boy who studied mathematics at Oxford before making his name as a "star trader" at Brevan Howard, one of Europe's largest hedge funds. He left in 2015 to found Rokos Capital Management, which now manages over $22 billion in assets.
His personal fortune is estimated between $2.3 billion and $3.3 billion, making the £190 million donation roughly 5-10% of his total wealth. It's a staggering sum by any measure, but particularly notable because it goes to education rather than the vanity projects that billionaire philanthropy often defaults to.
What It Means for Cambridge
Cambridge has needed something like this. While Oxford has the Blavatnik School of Government, Cambridge has lacked a dedicated institution focused on public policy and governance training. The Rokos School fills that gap — and does so with the kind of funding that allows it to attract world-class faculty, offer generous scholarships, and build the infrastructure needed to compete internationally from day one.
